1970 Corvette rear end seems to sway when accelerating

by Chris Roller

When I shift my 4-speed corvette and accelerate from any gear, I get a swaying effect from the rear end. Feels as though one wheel is ahead of the other, and sometimes I hear a crunching sound when they try to meet up. It is very unnerving when I am cruising down the road, as it feels kind of swaying like a boat. Does not feel like wheel bearings as there is no play from the side. I have 60,000 miles on the car.

I have a 1973 Sting Ray. I was having the same problem. After so much time spent I realized that I had just had my front suspension rebuilt.the idiot mechanic assembled the front suspension but he did not tighten any of the bolts. everything was left loose, therefore when I took it in the freeway,it was all over the road when I accelerated. once I took it back and got it all torqued everything went back to normal. I hope this helps

Do you turn wrenches on your car? If you do I'd suggest you check the rear suspension components. You know, the shock mounts top & bottom. Also the strut rod mounts. Check the four bolts that attach the center mounting bracket that holds your rear leaf spring to your differential housing. Here is a link to a picture of my rear spring bracket. You can see the 4 bolt heads I am talking about.
