'84 vette won't go into any gear

My corvette won't go into any gear now;it's an automatic when I bought the car about 4 months ago it would go into gear and drive. There was this loud noise that started all of a sudden and I noticed that it would do that when I started the car but when I put it in gear it would stop. Then I noticed that it wouldn't go into gear everytime I started it but if I turned the car off and started it back up it would go into gear. Eventually it just stopped going into gear altogether. It has an Lt1 engine with 30,000 mi and 3.73 gears and a small stall installed. I checked the fluid it looked really clean and didn't smell burnt. The car sat up for 8 years or so the previous owner told me and drove good before he parked it. I don't know if it could be the filter or something simple. Just looking for any help from another vette enthusiast. Thanks

Thanks for your feedback. I checked the transmission filter and changed it and it worked. The fluid didn't look burnt from the dipstick but in the pan it was a lil brownish. Only cost $34 for everything.

I think you blow the trany up .Don;t take it to a corvette place ,they will charge you a arm and a leg . Think off it as only a chevy and take it to a regular transmission place . It will be a lot cheaper, they know what they are doing ,it's just a chevy .Check several places and check with the BBB to see what their record is ,then make your decision. Good luck.
