cam went flat, replaced cam

1975, 350 automatic.

timing was off-backfired 3 times,newer edelbrock 1406 carburetor non egr electric choke, new spark plugs, ignition wires, cap and rotor, runs good at idle falls on face in gear an acts like vacumn leaks. I blocked off all vacumn ports. spread ether around the intakes and carburtor. no affect on motor.

I am stumped on what is wrong,

I would check fuel pressure, spark and make sure your timing is correct 18436572 and that at tdc the distributor rotor is pointing at number one piston. If all is good I would check to make sure you don't have bent push rods and inspect your heads for bent valves etc.
