I apparently have a short in the wiring to my fuel gauge

While I'm driving the Fuel gauge will drop to empty
without warning... then come back to full just as
quicky ... Its sometimes dead for an hour or so.
Obviously the "Range" in the fuel menu won't work then.

Any ideas where to look for the problem on this 98?
