You are required by law to have a front and back license plate in CA. I never had a issue with this in central CA (smaller, quieter towns), but my first week in LA I got a citation (around $50) for not having a front license plate. I didn't even think it was noticeable, I still had a matching "Corvette" plate in lieu of the official registration plate, but once you get that ticket there's not much you can do about it. Was a big headache. I would suggest staying on the safe side and having 2 registered license plates if you're in CA.
Also, once my mother received a ticket at LAX parked in their temporary parking garage (for only 20 mins!) solely for not having a front license plate.
DEFINITELY make sure you have two plates if you're driving a corvette around the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Depends on what state the Car is registered in. In Michigan its not required. I have heard of people in required states running without them and hoping not to get pulled over.
