the lights on my 79 pop up ok....but they don't come on. Is there a switch that activates when the door opens?

No, the contacts are inside the switch where you pull the headlight knob. The vacuum is routed thru the switch to open the lights but it is mechanical. The headlights should actually come on instantly when you pull the switch and be on as the lights pop up. You might check the grounds for the headlights first, but the problem may be inside the switch.
