spare tire rim type and size for 1966 corvette

What rim type and tire size was meant to mounted in the spare tire compartment on the 1966 corvette? I have no spare tire, so purchased a modern replica of the knock off rim and mounted a P215/70R15 tire (as per the tires that are currently on the car). To my dismay, this rim/tire combination does not fit into the under car spare tire tray. What is meant to go in there? The car has the knock off style wheels.
