C4 Idle problems

by Ian Wilding
(United Kingdom)

I have a 1990 C4, the car has recently started having problems on idle when the gear is in drive. The idle will not be consistent and the engine rocks slightly from side to side. If I have the car in either neutral or park the idle is absolutely perfect. The only thing I have done to the car recently is change the battery. Any help is most appreciated.

idle problems?
by: Anonymous

things to check for? Did you recently purchase vehicle from a different sea level location? (air fuel mixture change?) will effect computer settings? How long was the battery out of the vehicle? This can reset the settings on the computer if battery out for longer than 10-15 minutes etc...etc... the computer may have to be retaught to idle specifications again? also maybe a coincidence...check fuel pump line pressure at closest point to the engine. is it constant or fluctuation in pressure? also Put an electrical current ohm meter on the connections plug while vehicle is running.... to the throttle position sensor. Does reading fluctuate high to low when engine rocks etc...? sounds like fuel variations in pressures. Thanks Ned.
