rough idle,lack of power

my 86 vette is running really rough,it seems like it misfires and has total lack of power,how can i check for these problems myself?

If your car was running fine and this problem just started to happen, check this. Check for burnt spark plug wires that could be grounding out. With hood open, start car in a dark area and see if any sparks are jumping from any middle sections of wire to any metal. If this is happening this causes a miss. Either wrap burnt area of wire with electrical tape, or replace wire. Also, change cap and roter.
