1971 automatic lunges when put into gear.

My transmission wants to lunge forward when I put it into gear. I am not sure if the transmission needs a complete overhaul, or just a torque converter problem. The car has 86,000 miles. After I put the car in drive, and after it lunges, It drives smoothly, but doesn't have the the power to spin the tires. I wanted to get some advice from someone who may have seen this problem before I go to a mechanic. It's always good to be informed, and could save me the difference of paying for a complete overhaul or a simple fix. Thank you for your impute. John.
