Driving along and compressor clutch smoked

by Jeff Washburn
(Sandy Hook, Ct)

I found my compressor never shuts off. I need to get into the control wiring. So I figured in the mean time just pull the plug off it. Driving along and smelled something burning. Pulled over and found the clutch smoking. I cut the belt to get home. When I got home and the car cooled down I found the clutch pretty much melted but the pulley spins free like a wheel off the ground. Do I just change the clutch? Should the pulley spin that free?
