Gauge failure when headlights are on
by: Buck

These kind of problems are almost always a poor ground. When you turn the headlights on, the dash lights come on, and they use common grounds with the gauges. If the dash ground is weak or corroded, the voltage coming in with the lights on overloads the ground, and things start to fail. Trace the ground off the back of your gauge cluster, look for bad connections or corrosion. You can even run a new ground wire (12 gauge, so its big enough; better too much ground wire than too little) from it to a nice clean ground if youre not too worried about originality. That should solve your problem.
