speedo gear change
by: Auto Appraiser * Ned

automatic or standard ....follow speedo cable to where it goes into the side of the transmission. the cable should thread into a small housing mounted to the side of the transmission. unscrew cable end and remove from housing, then a small locking bolt/flange (like a distributor lockdown flange with fingers hold it on) remove this small bolt and flange...then pull out the small round housing (usually by hand) it has an o-ring on it so fluid will not leak...and may be hard to pull stuck...lightly tap with wood hammer or plastic hammer while pulling it out. be careful of cast threads ** once removed housing should have gear attached to inside of it. gear is color coded to match for rear end gear ratio....and correct speedo reading. install new gear from transmission shop (a dime a dozen) all early GM same type (use same color gear). put new gear in small housing** and re-install. ps if speedo is bouncing (not steady MPH) while driving...cable is the problem...not the gear...just athought. Thanks Auto Appraiser *Ned.
