loud knocking noise in front engine near timing chain area

I started my 1979 vette (with small block 350 in it)and there was a loud knocking sound coming from timing chain area. Is this going to damage my engine? What could it be. Nothing is there as far as I know except timing chain and sprockets. Thanks
