Shift panel/console light stays on

I noticed a light on the shift panel of my C3 (P,R,D123)stays on while the car is parked. I don't drive the car at night and just happen to look at the car and saw a glow. Does the light remain on even when the car is not being driven and parked? If not, how do I turn it off? The knob for the interior light does not switch it off. Thanks for your help.
