1997 corvette dual mode a/c control

My 1997 coupe auto,loaded 46,000 orig miles ,but dual mode a/c comes on randomly once on can be set to temp,all modes then just loses power shuts off. some times won't come on at all,then out of no were comes on and ice cold miles down the road.yesterday stayed on 5 hrs straight then good bye,its driving me nuts.Please help.thanks,RON M.panama city,fl.
