Tinny clanging noise on acceleration or stopped on hill

I won’t go back to the shop that caused this. My computer got wet from condensate overflow. The corvette tried to start itself when I was in the house with key in my pocket. It stopped cranking when I disconnected the battery. That cooked the starter relay. At the time only the 5th HVAC fan speed worked. When I retrieved the car it immediately made the clanging noise that sounds like something hitting the fan blades of an old whole house fan. The noise is irregular and skipping and only occurs on acceleration or when stopped on a hill while goosing the engine. It’s coming from the engine bay. I’ve listened with a stethoscope to no avail. I’ve noticed a tiny water pump leak so it may be that. I’ve looked under the car for heat shields, loose Corsa exhaust, cat noise, loose parts, etc. I’m totally mistified. It’s quite loud. I have made the earliest appointment with Buyavette in Atlanta for September 5th for this and a couple other things but would like to resolve this before then.

Final post!

I have apologized to the shop that I thought had caused the noise. We had the trans rebuilt. The noise persisted. Buyavette had never heard a noise like that. My Vette had tried to start itself. Those are two rare occurrences. Buyavette somehow didn’t hear the story about the car trying to start itself. As soon as the service manager finally heard the story, he knew what the noise was and ordered a new starter! They replaced it in an hour and the noise was GONE! The starter had overheated and now the gear that engages the flywheel was loose on it’s shaft and was bouncing back and forth between the flywheel and starter, generating the noise! My Vette has 156,000 miles. Everything replaced or rebuilt needed it and now it’s quieter and so smooth it feels like a new car! I think the noise disappeared after acceleration due to airflow holding the gear back away from the flywheel.

Follow up to above. Buyavette Service thought the noise was from the torque tube. Replaced the torque tube, bearing at engine end was going bad and the splined shaft was a little loose. The noise was still there. The only thing left is the auto trans and the differential. Rear ends don’t make that type of noise. Remember it will make the noise parked on a hill in neutral. So the tranny will be rebuilt.
